Good ’Hoods: Top Toronto Neighbourhoods for Families With Kids

January 12, 2021

The most multicultural city in Canada, Toronto is home to countless families with roots from all over the world. Any and every Toronto neighbourhood (there are 140, for now!) has some contingent of families making up its demographics, but certain spots are especially attractive to those with steady incomes who’re about to become parents. You’ve probably heard of fam-friendly favourites such as The Beaches, Roncesvalles or Riverdale. These areas’ proximity to schools, green spaces and mom-and-pop businesses catering to other moms and pops make them ideal destinations for those with growing children. But we’d like to feature three perhaps lesser-known options that have a plenty to offer you and your little ones.

In this first installment of a four-part series profiling Toronto neighbourhoods that suit different kinds of lifestyles, let’s keep it in the family and find some great places to grow up.

1. Leaside

We’ll start in the middle, but north of downtown and directly east of where Bayview intersects Eglinton Avenue. Here you’ll enter Leaside, a lovely pocket of strategic urban planning whose quiet residential blocks stay that way because major roadways don’t intersect them. Instead, well-maintained yards compete for curb appeal and neighbours wave hello on peaceful, tree-lined streets. Leasiders enjoy easily walkable access to transit, schools and interesting local shops. A vast tract of beautiful green space is right around the corner in the Don Valley’s linked network of ravine parkland. If your budget lets you bid on Leaside’s big-ticket real estate, you’ll move into a high-demand community proud of its family orientation.

2. East York

Toronto’s east end is where many families cluster along the bustling main artery, The Danforth. Southward, the sought-after Beaches neighborhood offers the draw of its namesake boardwalk along Lake Ontario, but if you instead venture north of the Danforth, you can discover the up-and-coming area of East York - once home to the highest percentage of Torontonian senior citizens, now an entry point for new families seeking affordable comfort with quick access to downtown via the Gardiner Expressway. Outdoor pursuits in the lush Don Valley and indoor explorations at the world-class Ontario Science Centre are short drives away, so kids will have lots to keep them busy in this diverse borough that’s also busy with gentrification. Quiet streets of bungalows with large yards back and front may be just the thing for your young clan, especially if you’re first-time home buyers eager to try a renovation.

3. Runnymede

Go west, young fam, and you might find yourself at home in the cozy neighbourhood of Runnymede. With trendy Bloor West to the left of you, and sprawling High Park (Toronto’s largest) to the right, you’re central to the brisk pace of boutique window-shopping or a casual amble through the cherry blossoms in spring. Nearby Black Creek Drive gets you out of the city fast and onto the major highways. Or would you rather explore a ravine trail closer to home along the Humber River? Two steady incomes could get you into the two-storey detached houses on Runnymede’s charming streets, from which you’ll quickly reach major transit stops, several schools of high reputation, and vibrant new storefronts along Dundas Street West in The Junction.
